Knock me down and watch me come back stronger... there never were truer words spoken in Rona Octavia's personal tale of triumph over adversity. A relationship breakdown creates a watershed in Rona's life and this is turned into a personal quest to swim the English Channel.
This is not just a journey across the sea but also a voyage of discovery through love, life and the human condition. This story will take the reader not only through the challenges and ups and downs of a choppy sea but also the emotional journey that we all make as human beings leading us to the inevitable conclusion that the only thing that really matters in life, is the love of other people.
Knock me down and watch me come back stronger will keep you uncertain as to the outcome until the very last page has been turned; a gripping story but one that will leave you feeling warmer inside.
Knock Me Down and Watch Me Come Back Stronger eBook Rona Octavia
On the surface, this is a "feel-good" story of a young woman who turned a low-point in her life into a personal triumph. That's always pleasant to read about, but I think the real value is in the insights into the author's background and the people and events that shaped her. Today, we talk openly of the importance of mental and emotional health, but we still haven't answered the most important question of all: why do some people have the strength to fight back from adversity while others don't? Maybe the answer is hiding in plain sight. The catalyst to her unhappiness was a love affair gone bad, but there was more to the story than that, as there always is. The author relocated far away from her family and cut herself off from friends in order to be with her lover. In short, she put all of her emotional eggs in one basket and the basket had a hole in it.
But I think there were problems beyond an unfaithful lover. She was in debt and (apparently) doing work that she found unsatisfying. She was sedentary and gained weight. It sounds like she was clinically depressed and her depression may have started long before the love affair ended badly.
She hit on the idea of swimming the English Channel as a way to force herself to set goals and take control of her life. That shows great wisdom on her part and as she tells about her strong-minded Guyanese mother and her adventurous father, you began to see the source of her strength and determination.
The author was lucky to have a happy childhood with a large extended family. She was even luckier to be raised by adults who understood instinctively that mental health is as important as physical health and that both are influenced by our actions. They gave her the tools she needed to overcome her depression and get her life back on track. Without her family's support and example, her story could easily have ended in tragedy.
I read a rough version of this book two years ago and was impressed by the author's likable personality and her hilarious stories. I'm still giggling over the tale of her being treated for hyperventilation in a London ambulance outside her Guyanese grandmother's Pentecostal church while the fired-up worshipers beat on the sides of the vehicle pleading with the Almighty to exorcise her demons. I'll bet the paramedics dined out on THAT one for a long time!
Unfortunately, the first edition was so filled with errors that it was difficult to read. It was a great story, but poorly presented and I remember thinking what a shame it was. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who saw the potential because the author was able to find a publisher. I bought the new version and I'm glad I did. The book has been edited and expanded and it's a huge improvement.
There are still things that I would have changed, but it's better organized and the transitions are smoother. It won't win a Pulitzer Prize, but the reader can have the fun of getting to know this charming author and her lively family without distractions. It's an encouraging story and she tells it with style.
I'm not interested in swimming or athletic feats of any sort, but I enjoyed this little book. It's a heart-warming, satisfying story and that's what I look for in a memoir.
